Crown or Bridge: Which Do You Need?
Crown
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects one damaged, cracked, or root-canal-treated tooth. At Smile Services of New York in Manhasset, NY, a crown is usually completed in two visits: the tooth is prepared and a temporary is placed, then the final crown made by our dental lab is fitted and polished.
Bridge
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the teeth on either side of the gap. It is fixed in place, not removable, and is custom-made by our dental lab in Manhasset.

● What Happens ●
From First Visit to Finished Tooth.
A crown and a bridge follow the same path. A temporary covers you the whole way, so you are never left with an unprotected tooth or an open gap.
Exam and plan
X-rays and a check of the tooth, the bite, and the gums. You see your options and exact price before anything starts.
Prepare and protect
The tooth is numbed and shaped, and a temporary goes on before you leave.
Custom-made
Our dental lab partner builds your crown or bridge to match the shape, shade, and bite of your other teeth.
Fit and finish
The temporary comes off. We check the fit at the gumline, adjust your bite, then cement and polish.
Had a Root Canal? That Tooth Needs a Crown.
A root-canal-treated tooth is more brittle and can crack without a crown to protect it. If you've had one here or anywhere else, we can finish the job.

Crown & Bridge Questions.
My crown fell off. What do I do?
Keep the crown, avoid chewing on that side, and call us. The exposed tooth is sensitive and can chip, so we protect it at your first visit. Often the original crown can be re-cemented; if not, we place a temporary and plan a new one.
How long does a crown take?
Most crowns take two visits. At the first, the tooth is prepared and a temporary is placed. The final crown is custom-made by our dental lab and fitted, checked, and polished at the second visit.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth and gum are fully numbed before any work starts, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Some sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days afterward is normal. Tell us if the bite feels high; a small adjustment fixes it.
How long do crowns and bridges last?
With good home care and regular checkups, crowns and bridges commonly last ten to fifteen years, and often longer. Brushing, flossing under a bridge, and avoiding chewing ice or hard candy all extend their life.
Crown vs filling: how do I know which I need?
A filling repairs a small to moderate area of damage while most of the tooth is still strong. A crown covers the whole tooth and is recommended when a crack, large filling, or root canal has left too little healthy structure to hold a filling. Your exam and X-rays show which one applies.
Bridge vs implant: which is better?
A bridge is faster and does not require surgery, but it relies on the neighboring teeth for support. An implant stands on its own and preserves the teeth beside the gap, but takes longer to complete. Our team includes an oral surgeon, so we can walk you through both in one place.
Can an old or failing crown be replaced?
Yes. A crown that is loose, chipped, has decay underneath, or shows a dark line at the gum can be removed and replaced. We check the tooth beneath it first and tell you exactly what it needs.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. 0% financing is available for prequalified patients. You will see your exact price and payment options before any treatment starts.
